Yoga in America has a rich past. This ancient practice began in India as a laborious tradition that only wealthy people could afford. Yoga has gained popularity over the years as a fitness routine with a strong spiritual component. Yoga is affordable for all budgets and lifestyles. Yoga comes from Sanskrit which is the Sanskrit word for "union". The goal of practicing yoga is to unite the individual self with the supreme Self.

The early 1960s saw very little yoga being taught in America. This was due in large measure to a 40 year-old immigration law which barred Indians residing in the U.S. It was passed by West Coast union leaders to keep Indians and other Asians from coming to the United States. In the 1970s, a flurry of gurus emerged. There were many Indians who lived in the United States.




The first true yoga practitioner in the West was Sarah Farmer. She became friends with Swami Vivekananda while attending conferences at the Green Acre. Swami Vivekananda was invited to America by the two of them. Sara Bull and Haridas Chaudhuri also met, having been sent by Sri Aurobindo to the U.S. In the early 1970s, they began to teach each other yoga.


In the 1950s Swami Vivekananda, an Indian-trained Westerner, introduced yoga to America. In the early 1890s he introduced American citizens to Hatha Yoga. As the popularity of this form of yoga increased, more gurus from India arrived in the U.S., bringing new forms of yoga to the country.

Yoga was first developed in India in the 1930s. It was not popular in America until the 1970s when stars like Aldous Huxley or Charlie Chaplin began to take an interest. The rise in posture-based forms and yoga led to the American rise of yoga. The Western physical culture was influenced by the Indian traditions in Hatha yoga. This transformation took place in the late 20th century. Then, Swami Kuvalayananda and other American yogis framed the practice in medical science, giving it a more mainstream foundation.




Despite yoga's historical roots, its first American success was not in America. It wasn't until the 1950s that the majority of Americans had heard of the practice. The era of yoga's growth in the west was characterized by a wide range of practitioners. Sivananda and Desikachar were among the first yogis to bring the teachings of the Guru to the United States.
